Inspired by anecdotal stories found in the Burnaby Archives about the area’s transition from forest to orchard, artist Devon Knowles applied the Sierpinski mathematical formula to make visible fractal patterns found in nature. Using unit pavers of dark and light grey, Knowles re-creates the formula as an abstraction of nature. Rising from this ground plane are a series of cylinders of different heights that in their random placement and variation of girth, could be considered abstractions of trees. These cylinders are capped with thick coloured glass that when lit from within, emanate a soft glow at night, while in the day, function as light wells providing daylight to the parking garage below. Knowles also worked with landscape architect Robert Barnes from Perry + Associates to apporoximate and restore the area’s past green-scape. - http://collections.burnabyartgallery.ca/detail/publicart115
